Digital Etiquette
Digital etiquette is defined as the standards of conduct expected by other digital technology users. Basically you are expected to demonstrate
appropriate behavior and choices in the digital community as well as understand the impact and consequences of those choices good or bad. All digital technology users must be aware of others when using technology and understand how technology use can
affect others.
1.) Describe in your own words what digital etiquette means to you.
Think about being in the movie theater and a person's cell phone rings. Instead of turning the phone off, the person engages in conversation with the caller during the showing of the movie. This scenario is a common, yet inappropriate use of technology. Today, technology is everywhere. While technology offers many amazing opportunities for its users, it also requires users to follow etiquette guidelines. Turning a cell phone off during a movie is just one basic example of digital etiquette.
2.) Have you or anyone you know done this before?? If yes what was your reaction? If no, how do you think you would react? Create another example of digital etiquette that you may encounter in your every day life.
You as a student make choices everyday as a citizen in the digital world. You need to make sure that you are making responsible choices since every choice has a consequence. Choices may include viewing age appropriate websites, communicating appropriately with others, respecting others opinions and materials posted in the digital world. You should try to avoid using technology in an inappropriate manner. Try to remember that everything you do can impact others lives even if you do not physically see them or their expressions. Try to post comments that you wouldn't mind someone posting about you. Live by the rule of treat others as you want to be treated.
3.) List three responsible digital choices that you have made in the past year. List three things that you wish you could take back or undo in the past year that you did on the internet or your phone. List three choices with positive consequences that you want to make in this year.
Examples of Inappropriate Digital Etiquette
- Speaking on phone or texting while driving
- Having loud cell conversations in crowded areas or in public places
-Texting while having conversations
-Using technology to bully or harass
-Not sharing public technology
-Using cameras on cell phones inappropriately
Examples of Appropriate Digital Etiquette
-Turning cell to silent or vibrate in public places
-Move away from others when having a cell conversation
-Share public technology
-Check messages during personal time(not in class or work)
4.)Look at the following two scenarios and write an appropriate example of digital etiquette and an inappropriate example of digital etiquette that can happen.
Scenario #1
One weekend a group of friends decide to do some
shopping. Sarah has decided to drive and after picking up a couple of friends
she merges on to the interstate and heads towards the mall. Traffic is heavy
as usual and within a few minutes Sarah's cell phone begins to ring. What can Sarah decide to do??
Scenario #2 - Amy
Antle
Following the soccer game, the team was in the locker room gathering
their belongings. Julie decided to take a quick shower since she was heading
to a friend's house to study for an exam she had the following day. Annie, the
team captain, thought it would be funny to use her camera phone to take a photo
of Julie in the shower. She quietly entered the shower area, and took a quick
photo of Julie. Annie runs back to the team bellowing with
laughter. What can the teammates decide to do??
